She twisted her wrists trying to get them loose. It was no use. They had been bound tightly and the knots seemed unmoveable. She closed her eyes with defeat and thought back, trying to organize her thoughts of what happened.

It had been a stormy day. The sky was dark with clouds and the wind blew strongly. The shutters on the classroom’s windows rattled and she could hear the wind howling outside. She shivered a bit as the cold air streamed by. Sighing, she continued copying the notes on the board. I have to concentrate and bring up my mark, she thought, thinking about her last test, another failure. Glancing up at the clock she saw that the class was almost over. As the teacher finished writing the homework on the board the bell rang, signalling the end of another school day.
“Hi Sidney”, she called as she neared her locker. Her good friend was there waiting for her. She grabbed her lock and twirled it to the correct digits. Cursing as she messed up and it wouldn’t open, she slowed down until she finally got it open.
“Hmm….yea,” Sidney said, apparently going to say something. “Huh?” she asked turning around to face her. “Aryn?…umm…there’s something cool I need to show you,” she replied, sounding unsure of her words. “Okay,” Aryn said warily, knowing that this was a bit unusual, “Just let me get my stuff.” She grabbed her coat and bag and headed off with Sidney, wondering if there was anything wrong.

She opened her eyes as the door creaked. She heard footsteps heading up the stairs and toward her. They stopped suddenly as the door creaked open again. The footsteps retreated down the stairs and muffled voices could be heard. Another creak as they left and silence once more. She sighed in quiet relief and waited for a few moments to be sure they were gone. She went back to her thoughts again.

It was dark and Aryn fumbled for the light switch. “What are we doing here?” she asked as she found the switch and flicked it on. She watched quietly as Sidney searched fro the right key to open the sound booth. “Don’t worry,” Sidney answered, as she found the key and opened the door, “we’re just here to get something.” She went inside and grabbed something from her pocket. “Coming?” she asked Aryn. Aryn approached cautiously, aware that there was something wrong.
She yelped as the needle struck home, she had been unable to avoid it. She twisted away and headed for the door. She grabbed onto a desk outside trying to catch her balance. Her breathing was hard and her head was dizzy. As she crumpled to the floor her only thoughts were on how she had been betrayed.

Her eyes flickered open, the pain registering again. Aryn looked around at her surroundings, looking for anything useful. At least I know where I am, she thought, that gives me an idea of where I can run to. Her hands were bound to a pipe, the knots tight and well tied. Standing up gave her the advantage that she could in fact kick if need be. She was on a platform up by the sound booth that was used for storage. In front of her were lockers and a few assorted objects, like chairs. To her right, the route to the soundbooth and the stairs leading to the door to the cafeteria. To her left was a corridor and a door at the far end leading out to the roof. She slowly started thinking of a strategy and struggled with her bonds. If I could only loosen my hands I could be home free in no time...  Her train of thought was interrupted by the door being slammed open. The sounds of a struggle came to her and she stopped to listen. The struggle apparently stopped and she could hear something or someone being dragged towards her. She heard heavy breathing as whatever it was passed in front of her and heard some mumbled cursing to her right.  The footsteps headed back to her left and the light blinded her as the lights were turned on. As her eyes adjusted to the light she was aware of someone in front of her.
“Glad to see your up. They did say you had to be unharmed so I’m glad the drugs didn’t last too long.” she said as she stood in front of Aryn. She knew that this would just get Aryn angry and was glad to be able to mess with her head for a change. “Yes, I know, you probably hate me. But……this is for your own good,” Sidney said mockingly, now more enemy then friend.
“Bitch,” Aryn said quietly, aware that her friend was not a friend anymore. “Ah yes, anger.” Sidney grinned, “How typical. You know your special? Or at least that’s what he told me. You know who it is too. I had to do it though. The reward was great and you know as well as I that we are no longer close.” “You betrayed me for a reward?!” Aryn hissed, furious with her now. “I trusted you, I told you what I felt, who I was, everything! And you sell me out to the highest bidder?! I thought you had some decency in you!” Sidney stepped back, surprised at the sudden outburst. She had seen Aryn mad but never like this. It was as if some part of her had been uncovered that she had never shown before.  “Who is it then? Who wanted me so badly?” Aryn demanded. Sidney stayed silent, apparently thinking of an appropriate answer. “You don’t need to know that now. You’ll find out soon enough as it is,” she replied coldly, “Have fun…..friend.”  Sidney turned and left.
The lights were off and Aryn was in darkness once more. She listened to her former friend’s footsteps and waited until she was sure she was gone before relaxing. She heard light breathing beside her and realized in her rage she had forgotten all about the other person from before. She listened carefully and heard the person catch his/her breath. “Who are you?” she asked cautiously, not knowing whether it was a friend or an enemy. “Aryn?” someone replied in a cautious whisper. “Matt!” she called, glad to have someone she knew here, “Oh my god, Matt! What happened to you? I thought you weren’t coming to school today.” “Woah,” Matt replied. “Slow down.” She then realized that she could see him slightly. The outside door was open and the faint light it gave was enough for her to see by. His hair was tousled and he looked injured but seeing him cheered her greatly.
Looking at her, he realized that there was something different about her. The old Aryn would never have had snapped at Sidney the way she just did. “Well, I sort of came so me and Ryan could go driving, but Sidney asked me to see something. When I tried to escape after realizing what she was going to do, she attacked me. She got me pretty hard with something though at the top of the stairs.” “Yes,” Aryn replied, “I heard that. Are you hurt?” “No, I’m all right. Sounds as if we’re in a bit of trouble if these people are coming for you soon though,” he said, his expression grim, “We’ll have to get out of here before then.”
Aryn looked away, unable to meet his glance. Her expression was pensive and he knew that she was thinking of something she had done. He wasn’t too worried. Hopefully, she had some information that would be able to help them escape. He knew she probably even knew what was going on. He had been drawn to her because of that. Her thoughts, ideas, they were all different from the usual ones. She knew things that others did not, went after things others wouldn’t dream of. This was one of the reasons he wasn’t too concerned about their situation. Knowing her, she would probably find a way out in no time.  “Aryn?…”, he asked softly, “Are you okay?”.
She didn’t reply immediately. She was still thinking about what she had done. She thought back to it, those nights she spent writing to him, unaware of what he could do. It seemed like a harmless connection. She could gain knowledge about his type and he could learn something from her. She never expected it to come to this. His last few emails hadn’t even brought up a mention of the fact that she might be in danger. “It’s all my fault,” she murmered, “I brought him here. I shouldn’t have talked to him, should’ve stayed away” “What are you talking about?” Matt asked, confused about how it could be her fault. Aryn looked at him, her expression pained. “It’s my fault we’re here right now,” she replied, “I went after what I shouldn’t have and got too into this dream that I was trying so hard to live. I’m sorry Matt, I never meant for it to go this far.” She looked away, unable to face him.
